e-Counselling Services

E-Counselling is also referred to as online counselling, Cybercounselling, online therapy or psychological and social services using technological advances, such as, videoconferencing, Skype, blogs, and various other secure login/subscription base portal to deliver the same method of traditional therapy and coaching through the internet.

We maintain the same professional ethics and standards of practice online as we would do if we were meeting you in an office. You can expect the same level of care that you would expect with a highly qualified and experienced in-person counsellor.  KMT continues to use technology throughout its programs and services to meet the needs of our clients. By focusing our expertise, we are arguably a unique blend of counsellors and coaches that uses technology as a benefit as our social structure continues to change and the use of secure/password protected meetings and discussions allows us to offer services with excellent quality and effective results.

Studies show that this form of therapy can be just as beneficial to clients, as classic, in office, face-to-face and now done electronically, online, face-to-face using technological advancements that are expanding and meeting the need of individuals that cannot get to therapy due to limitations that in-office therapy sometimes overlooks.

For example, household responsibilities (primary care giver), physical and emotional limitations, need to feel safe in one’s own environment, trauma, location, anxious or embarrassed about having to go or needing therapy, time to get to and from therapy, travels extensively for work, or conventional business hours.   This method is NOT e-mail conversations with your counsellor or coach but a face-to-face online session through a secure/password protected conferencing medium.

How does it work?

After you have securely registered and described your concerns online, your counsellor will contact you and request your ticket number.  Once verified you would be provided a username and password to login and an invitation request will be sent to confirm and commence services.

Registration and payment is fast and easy. But do take the time to describe your concerns so that your counsellor will know how to help you. You will receive a personal welcome from your counsellor within 24 business hours and a full therapeutic reply within 72 hours. You will need to login to our e-counselling system through the invitation to receive your counsellor’s messages to set up the time for your initial online face-to-face meeting.

E-sessions last as long as traditional sessions discussing your concerns, setting goals, and working through solutions. This is a counselling session. Similarly, your e-counselor will spend at least 50 minutes writing you an in depth and personal therapeutic reply that will be shared online through your invitation (username and password) which is shared online once you login.

Psychological and Social practitioners, regardless if they see clients in person or work with clients through electronic technologies (i.e Telephone or Blog) must adhere to ethical guidelines and principles. This means that therapists at KMT Learning maintain professional, ethical standards for all clients.

It is important that clients experience KMT’s e-counselling as competent practitioners, who conduct themselves with the utmost integrity. This means that we do not discriminate against clients on the grounds of cultural, racial, religious, and/or sexual orientations. We do not conduct therapy with individuals that we feel need a more intensive level of treatment than we can provide nor do we continue to work with individuals who we feel are not benefiting from our treatment approach. In such cases, we make recommendations for other possible treatment options that they can pursue.

Your consent for any service we provide will be sought prior to the service commencing and as it progresses.

 Confidentiality in Therapy

The need for confidentiality in the therapeutic relationship is crucial for therapy to be successful. Thus, at no time will any of your therapy be discussed or documentation forwarded to others outside of KMT without your consent.

All physical documentation is maintained in a locked cabinet and all electronic documentation is kept on a desktop computer that only KMT’s therapists can access with secure password protections. These records are generally maintained for a minimum of seven years since your last contact with your therapist and then disposed of in a secure manner.

It is important that you are aware that the therapist must disclose client information where there is a legal obligation to do so. Also, if the therapist feels that you may be a threat to yourself or others, s/he is ethically required to report this to the authorities only as a means to avert harm. This includes suspicion of child abuse.

Confidentiality with E-Counselling and Phone Counselling

While we feel very strongly that eCounselling and TeleCounselling can be beneficial for many individuals, it runs a heightened risk of confidentiality being breached. It is important to remember that E-Counseling and Phone Counselling are limited by the security of the technology. Especially with eCounselling, limitations include system breakdown, authorised (e.g., internet service provider system administrator) and unauthorised persons potentially viewing messages, and the potential access of deleted messages where back-up records have been made.

Importantly, if you decide to have eCounselling or Telecounselling, it is your responsibility to make sure you have the necessary privacy you need. This means if you are at home, at work, or in a public place, you need to be aware of who may be present and thus invade your privacy during your counselling session.
